This year’s annual International Roadcheck by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will be from May 17 to 19, 2022, with a focus on wheel ends. Commercial motor vehicles and their drivers in the US, Mexico and Canada will undergo inspections under the North American Standard Inspection level at designated weigh and inspection stations, temporary inspection sites and on roving patrols.

What to Expect
CVSA Inspectors will assess the commercial motor vehicles under the North American Standard Inspection Program, which encompasses the organization’s standardized procedures and requirements to ensure proper and uniform compliance and enforcement.
The North American Standard Inspection also involves the inspection of the drivers’ credentials and documentations, including:
- Driver’s license
- Driver’s record of duty status, as required
- Hours of service
- Alcohol and drugs
- Medical Examiner’s Certificate, if applicable
- Skill Performance Evaluation (SPE) Certificate, if applicable.
Vehicles and drivers will also be inspected under the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria, which is basically a pass-fail assessment that, if any critical out-of-service violation is identified, will prevent the vehicle/driver from traveling for a duration of time, or until violations are addressed and the conditions are fixed.

This Year’s Focus: Wheel Ends
CVSA highlights the wheel ends as the main focus for this year’s International Roadcheck. These components are critical for braking. They are also important in maintaining control and stability as well as supporting heavy loads typically handled by commercial motor vehicles.
CVSA typically focuses on a specific aspect of roadside inspections every year. For this year, the organization has identified that violations related to wheel end components comprise 25% of the total out-of-service vehicle violations identified during the annual inspections. Furthermore, data from the International Roadcheck in the past have also frequently identified such violations to be among the top 10 vehicle violations.

Successfully Passing the International Roadcheck
A CVSA decal is provided to vehicles that successfully passed the North American Standard Level I or Level V during the International Roadcheck without any violation under the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria.
Take note, however, that the CVSA decal only applies to the condition of the vehicle and not the driver. In essence, drivers may be deemed out of service even if their vehicles qualify for the decal. Furthermore, official decals are to be affixed by certified CVSA inspectors.
The official decal is valid for three consecutive months, which means that your vehicles displaying the decal will not undergo re-inspection during the validity period. This doesn’t mean though that your vehicle is immune to re-inspection if there’s an obvious defect or safety violation identified on the vehicle even if the decal is still valid.
